I've never thought or considered making my own refried beans before. Why, they come in a can and it couldn't be easier than that, right? I have a teenager......need I say more? She doesn't like the refried beans from the can, she says they taste funny. This is actually a good thing because this way I can control what is in the beans and make them healthier. Here is the recipe I found and adapted to make it vegetarian.
3 cups pint beans
3 tablespoons butter
5 jalapeno rings
½ tablespoons salt
½ tablespoon garlic salt
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon cumin
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 cup of cheese
Rinse and soak 3 cups of beans for an hour or longer. Then rinse them again, put them in the crock pot with the butter and cover them with 3 inches of water. If you need to add more water later in the day, bring it to a boil in the microwave before adding it to the crock pot. Cook the beans on high for 5-6 hours, or until they can easily smash between your fingers.
When the beans have about a half hour left to cook then add the jalapeno rings, salt, garlic salt, onion powder, cumin and chili powder. ![]()
After that cooks for about half an hour, scoop out the beans with slotted spoon to the food processor and puree with the cheese. Add liquid from the beans as you puree until you get the desired consistency.![]()

They came out so creamy and rich. I put in extra jalapenos and it was a little spicy, we really liked it a little on the spicy side. I don't think I will ever buy refried beans in a can ever again.
Then I sautéed onions (how many times have I said that on this blog?) and warmed tortillas and we made bean and cheese burritos. Hailee and Mike had theirs with sautéed onions, I added a little red sauce to mine.![]()

I've never tried this, but it looks so good, I could eat it with a spoon. Bandwidth is a confirmed bean hater, but I'm betting he'd love this. Thanks so much for the great step-by-step!
This sounds wonderful and I love how creamy it looks. Thanks for sharing this recipe. It is appreciated. I hope you are having a wonderful Foodie Friday.
OMG this looks great! Who would have thought, beams onions and cheese.
